A Native American Warrior Woman
Molkie - I have no idea if I am spelling her name correctly; it sounds like Mole-key when I heard it spoken.
I assume Molkie was from the Southern Cheyenne because she was with Black Kettles band during the massacre at Sand Creek in south eastern Colorado on November 29, 1864. During this attempted genocide things were done to women and children that make the “terrorist” of today look like school children! Our soldiers cut open women’s bellys to remove the babies and then kill them. They cut off private parts of the dead men as trophies for their loved ones at home.
Molkie saw all of this as her mother, father, and grandfather were all killed by the soldiers lead by Col. Chivington. Her then husband Standing Bull was also killed protecting her from harm.
There were few woman warriors among the Cheyenne but they had their own medicine women, their own way to prepare for battle, and their own songs as well. The process to prepare for war was not a simple thing.
I do know that the Cheyenne Women Warriors were feared not only by other native nations but also by the U.S. military commanders.
The fact remains that Traditional Native Culture had roles for people as their visions demanded of them.
While we describe “freedom” in terms of materialism traditional people see freedom in terms of spiritual freedom. You are what your spirit is and they did not waste individual’s gifts as todays western civilization does.
