Warning, this is not politically correct.

I’m sure it will offend someone, somewhere, but I must have my say.

My mother in law was actually thinking about buying a young man I know a “rack” for a present. You know those ugly looking gold and silver fake teeth covers that gangsters favor these days.

Now the part that really gets me is that there is a huge lie she is buying into, which is that gangs are only a different type of culture.

Well, that is true and not true.

While what ever they wear is not important to me and are only minor cultural differences, there are other things which gangs do and promote which I am NOT cool with.

(And no matter how different a culture is those things are not okay.)

Now this is coming from someone who has known people in gangs, who have come out of gangs, lived in a ghetto neighborhood, etc.

The types of violence and crime that gangs promote are not okay.

So the point is that my mother in law ( a very confused Democrat [oh, I don’t like republicans either]) was going to buy this present and support the gang culture and all the things it represents, but then she tells me that she believes all guns should be illegal (total gun ban) and that honest, responsible, law obeying citizens don’t have the right to buy and carry guns.

Now keep in mind that this site is not about a gun control or ban debate, and this article is not about that either.

What this is about is the woman says that other women who obey the law and want to use guns to protect themselves shouldn’t have the right to carry a gun for self defense, but then has the audacity to consider promoting gang lifestyle.

I’m just livid! Helloooo! Make up your mind already!

Who would you really rather support. A responsible woman no matter what her status and culture who owns a gun, or a criminally based society!

Thank God a black friend of theirs ( I think the only colored one that they have…) told her he didn’t think it was such a good idea to promote the gang life style.

I’ve lived among them. It’s not so fun. Gang initiations, knife fights, drug dealing, shootings every other weekend, apartments on fire because so and so is pissed at a dad for telling them to stay away from his kid and not sell him drugs, a kid who left a gang barely surviving the ritual beating to leave it (if you survive) now permanently disfigured and brain damaged and feeling that it was worth it to get out……

On and on and on….

It is not a fun way to live. It’s certaintly not galmorous they way the make it out in some movies.

It’s tragic, and stressful.

Not my idea of the American Dream, I can tell you that.

So think carefully before you decide who you want to support having the knowledge and power of violence. It can be used for good or ill depending on who is wielding it.

Personally I’d rather support an army of women who will use it responsibly to keep themselves and their families from harm than the criminal element.

The problem is we cannot control the criminal element completely –never have, never will. But we can control teaching women to use it responsibly to create safety and empowerment.

So that is part of what we do! (And always remember violence can happen without guns.)

P.S. Oh, and I want you all to know, I actually like and get along with my mother-in-law, even when we have different political views sometimes and even when I’m frustrated about it!
