Proficiency
How often do you practice with your weapon or style of choice? When you are in a life or death situation you only do what you practice.
Too many people don’t even think about this.
There are women who actually carry mace in their overcrowded purse, who have never even purchased one extra canister to use in a practice run.
When a criminal attacks it is the WRONG time to fumble around in your purse, then attmpt to read the instructions while he’s strangling you!
Buy extra canisters. Take a day a month and just run through it. Practice as if you were being attacked. Include pulling it out of your purse! Try different directions. Spray something.
If you are using a Taser or a gun practice using it! It’s okay to take your kids along. Just make sure everyone is following proper safety rules!!!!!
I’ve heard people say, “oh, I have a laser site on it. I don’t need to practice.” Well, a laser sight will do you no good if you don’t remember to pull the slide and actually get a bullet in the chamber!
And what about if you choose to be a knife fighter?
Or martial arts…
Do you EVER practice your forms, kata’s etc in the clothes you actually wear in your regular every day doings?
I can tell you one thing. It’s VERY different doing a kick in jeans than it is in a gi. You will not be effective doing the moves without practicing them in what you REALLY wear.
Your feet move differently in shoes than barefoot. Do you practice your moves in your shoes? You will find it’s more difficult than when barefoot. You don’t spin around to face your opponent the same way in tennies on pavement as you do barefoot in the dojo.
A lot of this is common sense. Unfortunatly too many law abiding people don’t think about these details.
The criminals do.
I asked a gangster once how they ran away from cops in those ridiculous pants they wear. (I was hoping that somehow it would give the cop an advantage.)
He just looked at me for a second, then realized I wasn’t making fun of him, I really wanted to know.
He said,”We hold them up and run.”
Inside I was just busting up a gut! It’s like women of old hiking their skirts!!!
You would think that someone putting themselves in constant danger of being arrested would come up with a more conducive style than that, but…. the point is they have already thought about the limitations their clothes have and know what they are going to do about it to get away.
What are you going to do to get away from an attacker?
Practice stages first, so you don’t forget your most important option — Running away!
Practice in your mind too. If I’m walking; running away. If I’m in my car; driving away or using it as a weapon to protect myself. Then if this happens…. Then if that happens….. etc.
You don’t have to get carried away with this and dwell on it all the time, because the truth is violence never looks the same from one attack to another. You will NEVER be able to plan for the exact event.
It is mostly just an excercise to keep your mind aware of all it’s options, so that when an attack occurs you are thinking logically, or if you’re too scared to think that your muscle memory will already be acting out a plan.
Remember, make time to protect yourself, and you will feel the confidence of being safe!

So I just bought my first handgun…
I purchased a Walther’s P99 9mm.
I’m pretty jazzed!
I can’t wait to shoot it, and I think I might have convinced someone who knows a LOT about guns to do an interview with me that I thought might be very helpful to anyone who is a first time gun buyer.
It will be an interview on what to look for when inspecting your fire arm to make sure you are getting a good purchase and don’t get ripped off.
I figure that would be handy information.
I also now know a bit more about various laws that are involved as well.
For example: I never knew (yes, all you gun fanatics already knew this and none of you gun control fanatics new this) that it is illegal to transfer guns across state lines unless it is to a licensed firearms dealer.
You must then go that local dealer and proceed to get your background checked and all that. Then the compliance with the federal laws can still be enforced. (P.S. this is also true for gun shows — you must still go through the background checks and everything)
This is of course a measure to prevent black market distribution of guns. It is a very logical seeming step. How effective it is, I’m not sure.
Perhaps I can find some FBI statistics that can be helpful in finding that out.
So if you don’t choose to use a gun to protect yourself don’t worry. I’m not pushing that particular style of protecting oneself on anyone.
In fact there are plenty of times where a gun is useless or a hinderance!
And then there are times where one is logical.
But ALL the time, it is a personal decision.
Take care, and I’ll let you know how I like the new gun.

Dreams
Do you ever have dreams about stopping cruddy people from hurting others?
I don’t usually, but did last night.
Some guy was abusing his 3 or 4 yr old daughter and baby, choking them and slamming them against a the wall of a store.
When I stepped in to stop him, he turned and began to attack me.
So I just started picking targets and in no time he was laying on the ground with crushed testicles and a broken ankle and knee.
Now normally I wouldn’t be one to smile at that sort of an end, but I do now because it shows me how far different my life is from when I was scared to death all the time of any one bigger or stronger than me.
I used to be the one who would run terrified in any dream involving danger, or hesitate to step in — afraid of exactly what the guy did — that he would turn on me, and I would be hurt!
Now my mind is in such a different place. This dream made that VERY obvious to me.
It’s so refreshing that I can’t help but smile!
It’s nice to feel the confidence that I can handle people like that. The knowledge that even if my verbal skills (which obviously I would use first) wouldn’t take care of it, then at least I wouldn’t be in harms way.
That’s a really good feeling.
Now it’s probably important to address the fact that it’s not usually a good idea to step into other peoples situations unless you know the whole story or it’s an intimate family member you’re protecting.
You open your self up for a lot of legal liabilities usually.
But somehow I think that if it was little children who were obviously dong nothing to provoke the man and who was obviously hurting them VERY badly, that it would be appropriate to step in.
Of course I’m not an attorney. And the laws would make that a different situation in every state. But I don’t think I could just stand by and do nothing in a situation like that.
I would just hope that the Jury (common law juries have this power) would say that it was appropriate to step in and that any crappy laws that would punish anyone for helping little children that way would be inapplicable in that situation.
Just keep in mind that sometimes people end up being screwed for doing good deeds because of bad laws or good laws inappropriatly used.
This is why VERY often people will not step in to assist someone being attacked. They are afraid of legal liabilities.
So just know if it’s worth it to you before you stepped in.
